There is a major
gap in well trained transport
professionals which can be estimated at worldwide 250k
people. A study conducted by TUMI
shows “that there is a fundamental lack of understanding capacity in
the transport sector, especially for sustainable (urban) mobility.”
We
spend billions in concrete,
but only thousands in brains.
Major deficits in training
of transport professionals:
There
is a high demand for well trained transport professionals in
administration and private sector
In
many countries no training is done at all for transport engineers or
economists. E.g. in Guatemala transport people are trained as
architects or civil engineers.
Additional
training programmes in transport are mostly conducted within
development projects, specific to the project contents and for project
members only.
Often
participation in training courses is provided for the executive level
of administration, not for the planners that are actually conducting
the work (WRI 2020 Study).
Even after
successful studies, alumni often experience an inadequate
career entry .
Brain
Drain: Often alumis from developing countries remain in the developed
world after having received high quality training there.
Participation
in online training was good from Asia and Latin America, but meagre
from SSAfrica, where problems are worst.
